Iowa Governor Culver Signs Smoking Ban
Des Moines, IA - Governor Chet Culver has signed a statewide smoking ban. The ban was passed by the Iowa legislature. The ban applies to most public places, including restaurants, bars and businesses. Gambling areas in casinos are exempt; bars and restaurants inside casinos are covered by the ban.
Culver says there are compelling arguments against the ban, but "plain and simple, this bill will save lives. My goal is to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation, which is why I am proud to sign the Smoke Free Air Act," said Governor Culver. "This is a bill which reflects commitment and compromise; passion and practicality.
The ban takes effect July 1. Iowa is the 28th state to enact some form of ban on indoor smoking. The new Nebraska ban takes effect in June.
